Homeopathic Remedies
For those who live in areas where mental illness is not generally recognized, homeopathic remedies are commonly “prescribed” for instances of depression and anxiety. One of these natural fixes is exercise.
A study of Japanese adults experiencing depression found a positive correlation between physical exertion and depressive symptoms (Yoshikawa, et. alii, 2016). The Mayo Clinic also states that physical activity can aid in mental illness through the release of endorphins, endocannabinoids, and neurotransmitters, as well as increasing immune response to mental illness (Mayo Clinic Staff, “Depression…”, 1998-2017).
Australian researchers confirmed this, but added that, in their findings, general practitioners “believed exercise to be an effective adjunct, rather than a first-line therapy such as antidepressant medications or counseling” (Stanton, et. alii, 2014). This finding is very practical. Some mentally ill patients may not be able to adhere to physical activity to combat their depression- specifically the elderly, overweight, or those with other preexisting health conditions. With this, some people just might not want to be physically active or do not have time for it, and would instead rather try one of the other aforementioned means of treatment.
